Helping Small Air Emission monitoring businesses

May 10 2021

The Source Testing Association (STA) established the Small Business Task Group  to provide a forum and a resource to meet the needs of Small Businesses. Small Businesses often face challenges as they may not have the support structures or resources of large companies to address them. Take for instance in the recent Pandemic and the need for Self Employed people to apply for the Self-Employment Income Support Scheme. The STA small Business task Group was there to help and give valuable advice to its members.

The Group also has a watching brief on all the activities of the Source Testing Association and attempts to bring the needs of small businesses to the forefront of discussions. There are no formal meetings for the Group as such as most Small Business people are under pressure and the self-employed cannot always afford the time to attend meetings, however the Group Manager Roger Brown can be contacted anytime through the STA website.

 In his role Roger keeps a close eye out for policy decisions which might have an adverse effect on Small Businesses which may not necessarily affect larger businesses in the same way. Any STA member can raise an issue to the group which will be looked at, and if necessary, Roger will bring the issue to the management group of the STA to consider how the STA might respond to ensure all our members are supported.

Roger also sits on a number of ISO Groups as an active member of the STA and he represents the STA and BSI on these committees. Some aspect of this work is to ensure that Standards can be implemented by both large and small businesses and are technically appropriate to both.

The ISO Committees are:
TC146 SC1: Standing Committee for Air Quality;
WG 30:  Stationary source emissions – Determination of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in energy-intensive industries – Part 7: Semiconductor and display industries ISO 194764-7;
WG 33: Manual Method for the measurement of Ammonia from Stationary Sources (Completed ISO 21877);
WG 34: (Review of ISO 10849 Measurement of NOx from Stationary Sources by automated methods, this is being completed and a new work item set to revise ISO 7935 for the measurement of SO2 from stationary sources by automated methods instituted; and
WG 35: (ISO 11338-1/2 Revision Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons the WG is yet to meet).

As a very long-standing member of the STA and as a member who has been past Chairman, Technical Officer and Health and Safety Officer, Roger has seen many changes in corporate life, he brings to the management group both present and past STA experiences to ensure that there is continuity within the Association.

Roger can be contacted via his email or on the STA website.
